Data input

Methods:- analogue

1. switch/pole switch

2. potentiometer

3. joystick

4. slider

Digital/analogue

5. touch screen/d-beam (feedback loop)

6. address switches

The cheapest method would have to be potentiometers & switches for circuits with not many variables.

Carbon potentiometers tend to track if left in the same position for many years, this causes that familiar crackle on so many machines.

Because they are usually sealed you can not spray them with lubricant.

Logic arrays

Hard wired or software ?

Most machines today have one or two input devices which are switched between a whole group of parameters and their respective values.

These also degrade faster than normal.

So when choosing your input method think about the life expectancy and whether or not their will be spares or upgrades in the future.
